PC owners familiar with the Antimalware GO rogue security scam will instantly be able to identify the similarities between this rogue and its latest clone, Antivirus Monitor. Antivirus Monitor was designed with the specific intention of ripping unsuspecting consumers off. This can easily be deduced by examining the very nature of Antivirus Monitor. This rogue does not have any of the abilities it professes to, and despite its grand promises is unable to detect and remove any real threats from a PC.

Browser hijacking websites and fake online malware scanners are used to deliver the Antivirus Monitor infection into vulnerable PCs. It enters the system surreptitiously, and remains hidden from the user until such time that it is ready to start its attack against the system. This will usually happen by Antivirus Monitor initiating a fake system scan which will inevitably lead to bogusly generated scan results. These false scan results are only the beginning of Antivirus Monitor’s attack on the system, and a lot more will follow.

Soon after the fake system scan completes, the user will be presented with many fake security alerts. These fake alerts are only intended to panic the user into paying for Antivirus Monitor products. The main thing is simply to never pay for any Antivirus Monitor product, as you will not be getting what you think you are paying for. One of the many fake alerts to be on the lookout for reads as follows:

Windows Security Alert
Windows reports that computer is infected. Antivirus software helps to protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. Click here for the scan your computer. Your system might be at risk now.

As a further attack, Antivirus Monitor will block the user’s access to applications on the system. Each time the user attempts to launch an executable, he will be presented with the following error message and call to action:

Virus Alert!
Application can't be started!
The file defrag.exe is damaged.
Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?

Also, Antivirus Monitor will configure the PC to use a proxy server in order to hijack the web browser to display warnings each time the user attempts to connect to the Internet. One of the alerts users will receive when trying to connect to the Internet reads as follows:

Internet Explorer Warning - visiting this web site may harm your computer!
Most likely causes:
- The website contains exploits that can launch a malicious code on your computer
- Suspicious network activity detected
- There might be an active spyware running on your computer

At the end of the day the only way to limit the damage this rogue will cause will be to destroy Antivirus Monitor permanently. This is best achieved by investing in a powerful security application for the system. Not only will it obliterate Antivirus Monitor for good, but it will also adequately protect the PC against similar attacks in future.
